Service Advisor Nick scores a Century

Company News

Our Service Advisor at Lloyd Volvo Carlisle, Nick Hodgson, has recently was awarded a Century! Keep reading to find out more about Nick, this incredible achievement and where both his cricket and Lloyd Motor Group experience began...

Hello Nick, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your role as a Service Advisor at Lloyd Volvo Carlisle?

"Hello! I'm Nick Hodgson, 26 years old, and I'm born and bred in Carlisle, and I started working for Lloyd Motor Group from August 2016. I joined the company as a Parts Apprentice, moved into the Service Department in 2017, completed my Level 2 Customer Service Apprenticeship in 2018...and the rest is history."

Congratulations on being awarded a century, how long have you been working towards achieving this milestone?

"My role within cricket is ‘an all-rounder’ which means I bowl and bat within the team. The aim of a batter/batsman is to score as many runs during the game to help the team win. As a bowler, you have to take ‘wickets’ to stop the other team from scoring runs. The main achievement for me as a batter is to score as many runs as possible in every match you play. This century was my first for Stainton Cricket Club as I’ve been playing for that team for the last 2 years. My last Century I achieved was back in 2016 when I was 18...so a long time coming!"

*A century in cricket refers to a milestone achieved by a batsman when they score 100 or more runs in a single innings. It is a remarkable accomplishment and symbolises the skill of the player.

How long have you been playing cricket for? Do you remember your first experience playing cricket?

"I started playing cricket back when I was 10 years old when I was a junior. My stepdad, who has played cricket his whole life in Cumbria, was the reason I started playing cricket. His love and knowledge of the game was what inspired me to take up the sport. I first started playing cricket for Great Corby Junior team and was a complete novice of the sport! I started in the under 12 team and progressed throughout the different age categories up to the under 18’s. In 2016, I moved to Penrith Cricket Club to play at a higher standard within the adult senior team. We played a lot of teams within the Lancashire area which was quite a high standard of cricket where we often came across ex professionals who were playing against us. After 8 years at Penrith, I moved to Stainton where I have played for the last 2 years."

How do you prepare for a match?

"Like any person who plays sport, you try and fully concentrate on the match in hand and not focus on anything else, removing all distractions so that the sport has your full focus. I tend to prepare for a match differently depending on who we are playing on the day and what qualities the other team has."

What do you find the most difficult and what do you enjoy the most about cricket?

"Because cricket is a long format game, the hardest part is keeping full concentration throughout the whole game. Whether you’re batting, bowling or even feilding, it's so important to remain focused as you could made a difference to the outcome of the game very quickly. I enjoy being part of a team, I’ve never really been a sportsman who competes in a sport that only requires yourself. I’ve always wanted to be a part of a team and help others improve and learn from others to improve your game."

Are there any skills you’ve learnt from playing cricket that you apply to your role day to day as a Service Advisor?

"Teamwork being the popular answer, working together to achieve different goals and getting the best possible outcome. Communication is also huge part of both my job here at Lloyd Motor Group as well as communicating with my teammates during a game."

How did you celebrate this fantastic achievement?

"My celebration was simply opening a bottle after the game with family and my teammates! We still have two more games to go in this season so I'm concentrating on them and hoping for a similar outcome. I would love to add another Century at some point!"
