BMW Sales Manager Gavin Celebrates 25 Years at Lloyd Motor Group

Congratulations on 25 years at Lloyd Motor Group, Gavin! Tell us about yourself. 

“Hi, I’m Gavin, I’m 43 years old, and I live just outside of Carlisle with my wife and two children. I love running and cycling, and try to get out running five or six times a week. I enjoy most motorsports; however, Formula 1 is my passion and I will watch every race of the year. We are also lucky living on the edge of the Lake District and will spend as much time in the Lakes as possible when time allows, from fell walking to wakeboarding”.


Can you tell us about your career journey with us, from where you started to how you got to where you are today?

“I was 18 years old and had just left sixth form when I applied to be a Valeter. I worked in a small team (most of which still work with the company today) preparing the new cars for the showroom. To a self-confessed car nut, getting to work on such prestige cars was a dream job!

“After about 2 years I felt I wanted to progress, and I took the job driving the transporter delivering new BMWs across the country. This was a great stepping stone for me as I started to interact with customers at handover, and also gained a very good sense of direction - this was before the days of Sat Nav, so I got to know my way around the UK very well!

“After another 2 years and many thousands of miles later, I decided I wanted to work onsite in the showroom and took on the position of Parts Advisor. This was a very different job again, but it gave me great knowledge of the workshops and technical side of the cars.

“This then led to me becoming a Service Advisor, a position that I held for around 5 years before making the switch into Sales. I started in MINI sales for about 8 months, until a position arose in BMW which I immediately grabbed. I worked in BMW sales for 6 years until I was offered my current job as New Car Sales Manager, a position I’m starting my 10th year in!”


What is your favourite thing about your role as New Car Sales Manager at Lloyd Carlisle BMW?

“It sounds very cliché, but every day is different and I love the variance. From building new cars for the showroom, to working with the Sales team, to helping customers along their journey to purchase a BMW, no two days are the same”.


What are your standout moments from your 25 years working at Lloyd Motor Group?

“When BMW introduced the i3 and i8 electric cars back in 2013/14, I grabbed the opportunity to look after these models for a number of Lloyd retail centres. This opened up a whole new world for me dealing with some high-profile customers buying the i8’s, most notably delivering Wayne Rooney his new i8.

“The relationship with customers over the years is very strong, and I’ve gained some good friends having simply got to know them through selling cars”.


What is your favourite thing about working for Lloyd Motor Group?

“The motor trade offers a wide opportunity of career paths, and Lloyd Motor Group are very good at spotting potential and helping you chose the right path. Being family owned, it has a real personable feel and the Lloyd family always makes you feel valued”.


What are the biggest changes in the Motor industry you noticed over the past 30 years.

“Without a doubt it's the advances in technology. When I started, Bluetooth phone connection didn’t exist to make a phone call - now you can park your car via your mobile phone! The rate of development is mind-blowing and it is always fascinating seeing how BMW incorporate these changes into the new models”.
